Hyderabad: Even the Governor has to bear the brunt of the lethargic attitude of GHMC’s sanitation wing. For over 25 days garbage is not being lifted on the Raj Bhavan road, near Ratnadeep supermarket despite several complaints.
The Governor’s office has been dealing with garbage and stink from Hussainsagar for years. Earlier, before the Raj Bhavan road was repaired by the GHMC, it would experience severe water logging during monsoons.
In 2012, prior to the Biodiversity conference, Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan had said that he too was facing garbage issues. “I have been trying to get the garbage dump near the Raj Bhavan road removed for the last few months,” he had said and expressed hope, like so many in the city, that the civic body would clean up the mess at least for the ensuing Biodiversity conference.
Last summer, the Governor’s office had complained to the Pollution Control Board about stink from Hussainsagar. The PCB had conducted tests and blamed the HMDA for the stink.
The HMDA in turn had stated that due to the direction of the wind towards the Governor’s office they could not do anything about it.
That apart, waste is not being collected in a segregated pattern as many are not following the twin bin policy and the bins are being used for other purposes.
Kavita Krishnamurthy of Maruti Colony, Begumpet said, “Every morning we keep the bins on the ground floor for collection, but the sanitation staff dumps green and plastic waste together; even the other residents do not segregate waste and use their own dustbins and this is not questioned by the staff.”
The GHMC health and sanitation officer said, “Meetings will be held with sanitation staff and the RWAs to educate them on collection and dumping of garbage. Bins had not been distributed in many areas due to the elections.”
