Bengaluru public transport apps of little help to commuters
Bengaluru: Though BMTC has taken measures such as installing GPS in buses and mobile apps and is now planning yet another app, the commuters are unhappy with them. Lingaraj a commuter said, “In the app, there are flaws regarding location accuracy of the bus. Sometimes the vehicle numbers do not match. It does not show when is the next departure for a route, until the bus starts.” The fact that time tracking starts after departure and not before, is perhaps reflective of buses strictly not following schedule, especially the Non AC ones," Lingaraj added. “GPS was fitted in 41 Volvo buses for a year from 2006-2007.
During this the public complained about the app being dysfunctional. Bus drivers would dismantle the GPS devices, so they could cut short their trip. When brought to the notice of depot manager, they never bothered to take action,” said Muralidhar Rao, from advocacy group Praja RAAG. BMTC Managing Director Dr Ekroop Caur had recently announced an app providing inter-nodal transport information to commuters. It will provide real time information, through GPS, about the movement of buses and metro trains. However, the proposal is yet to be approved.
