More rains likely in Chennai, coastal districts

Moderate rainfall is expected to continue across Tamil Nadu over the next three days.

Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted light showers in the city over the next 24 hours and said due to the low pressure over southwest Bay of Bengal, many places in coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to get moderate rainfall.

Light rains are expected in a few places across Tamil Nadu, says N. Puviarasan, director of the Agromet Advisory Service Unit at the RMC. “Chennai will be cloudy over this period. There is a possibility of light rains in some parts of the city. As far as heavy rainfalls are concerned, it may be expected in a few coastal areas,” he said.

Moderate rainfall is expected to continue across Tamil Nadu over the next three days. In its all India weather forecast at 8 am on Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said, “Fresh easterly wave is likely to commence from Monday onwards and enhance the rainfall over South Peninsular India from December 4.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and coastal Tamil Nadu on Dec. 4, and over north and interior Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka on Dec. 5. Dry weather conditions are likely to prevail over the other parts of the country in the next four to five days.”

According to S. Ramachandran, astro-meteorologist, more widespread rainfall is forecast till December end, this year. The Southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala will get more rainfall and moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast for Central Tamil Nadu. Severe Flooding during this period is forecast.

He has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall between December 5 and 10, December 12 and 17 and December 21 and 24.

“Look for a Cyclone between Dec. 29, 2018 and Jan. 1, 2019. This system will cross the coast between Tuticorin and Tondi,” he warns.
