Hyderabad: A total of 4.7 lakh litres of liquor valued at Rs 9.6 crore has been seized after the model code of conduct came to effect. The authorities have also sealed 6,600 unauthorised liquor shops. Sources said there has been a 36.5 per cent drop in liquor sales as compared to the previous elections.

M. Kameshwara Rao, general secretary of the Association of Liquor and Beer Suppliers, said, “Primarily the drop of liquor sales can be attributed to the restrictions imposed by the excise department.”

Deputy commissioner C. Vivekananda Reddy said, “We are keeping 24 hour vigil on liquor shops to prevent influencing voters.”
