Bengaluru: To keep commuters safe, Metro fills train-platform gap

BMRCL to implement it at all stations in city soon n To use wooden plank to fill space.

Bengaluru: Metro stations across the city keep making announcements asking passengers to “mind the gap between the train and the platform before boarding and de-boarding". But still, many do not bother about the instructions and step out of the trains while talking on the phone without seeing where they are walking. Also, they get too close to an arriving train, which could lead to accidents.

To avoid any mishaps, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has come up with an idea to fill the gap between the train and platform with wooden material. A trial run has already been made at the Mysore Road Metro station.

Prakruthi B., a lecturer and a regular Metro user, said, “Safety is important and greater awareness can help people prevent accidents, which could lead to death and injury. I have seen many passengers, busy on their mobile phones, stepping out without caring about the gap. The BMRCL’s initiative to put the wooden material to avoid such accidents is a welcome move. A similar initiative should be taken at all stations.”

“The passenger inflow has been increasing by the day and in the rush, people are not in a mood to listen to announcements. We decided to cover the gap for public safety. We will implement it at all Metro stations soon,” a top BMRCL official told Deccan Chronicle.
