Bengaluru: Labourer dies inside airless sump
Bengaluru: A construction worker died of asphyxiation inside a sump at an under-construction building, while two others had a narrow escape when they went into the water storage tank at Peenya on Monday morning.
The deceased, Venugopal Reddy, 45, hailed from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. The two others have been identified as Srinivas and Swamy.
Peenya police have booked building owner Shivamurthy and contractor Rangaswamy for negligence and not providing safety equipment to the workers.
The incident occurred around 5 pm at the building in Nelagadhiranahalli. The probe revealed that the three workers got into the newly constructed tank to remove centring sheets to use them on the first floor.
Venugopal got inside the sump first, followed by Srinivas and Swamy. Immediately after he fell unconscious, while Srinivas and Swamy who were feeling giddy managed to climb up.
Passersby informed the police, who alerted the Fire and Emergency Services and an ambulance. The rescuers arrived at the spot and took the body out.
