Closing 3 gates at Cubbon: Proposal awaits approval

Murgod said that the ban is effective as gates are locked on these days and barricades.

Bengaluru: After conducting a survey, the Horticulture and PWD departments had proposed closure of three gates to traffic in Cubbon Park nearly a month ago. But the proposal is still awaiting approval from the Chief Secretary.

"We conducted a three-day survey from 8 am to 10 pm to assess the volume of traffic at all the gates. We found that the entrances near Hudson Circle, Bal Bhavan, Press Club, Karnataka Government Insurance Department office and M.S building (Lokayukta) saw the lowest vehicle movement. The gates near High Court and UB City (Siddalingaiah Circle) witnessed the most traffic," said Horticulture Department Deputy Director Mahantesh Murgod.

"In the report, we also identified six parking spots for people to park two and four-wheelers in case of flower shows and other big events. They were near Press Club Road, Venkatappa Art Gallery, Bescom office, M.S. Building, Kasturba Road, Cubbon Road, PWD office near Nrupathunga Road and Kanteerva Stadium," he said.

The proposal, if implemented, would curb vehicular congestion and pollution within the lung space. The suggestion comes after the traffic ban on second Saturdays and on all Sundays.

Mr Murgod said that the ban is effective as gates are locked on these days and barricades are put up in places where the gates are being installed.

But members of the Cubbon Park Walkers' Association (CPWA) contradicted his statement. CPWA president Umesh Kumar said, "First, some gates are open 24/7, including on all weekends. Siddalingaiah Circle gate near UB City is open for Tennis and Century club members to drive through. Second, there are no traffic policemen to enforce the rule. Third, there is no signboard to make motorists and car owners aware of the rule. "

Disputing the claim, Mr Murgod said that the boards have been put up at several locations inside the Park. No violations have been reported to the department, he said.
