Rs 320 crore worth new Rs 500 notes arrive in Chennai

Apart from RBI and airport staff, only CISF officials were informed about the arrival of the money filled IAF aircraft, the sources said.

Chennai: The Reserve Bank of India’s regional office in the city on Friday night received Rs 320 crore in four containers of new Rs 500 notes and the same would be dispatched to banks across the state in the next couple of days for dispersion through ATMs and bank counters. Last week Chennai RBI had received Rs 500 crore worth new notes.

The IAF flight carrying the new notes was flown from Security Press in Nasik in Maharashtra and landed at Chennai airport around 7.20 pm Friday amid high security. Only 14 staff of the RBI along with security personnel were allowed entry and the notes were transferred to four containers before exiting the airport at around 10.15 pm. Airport sources said the notes worth Rs 320 crore was transported by the RBI from the airport.

Apart from RBI and airport staff, only CISF officials were informed about the arrival of the money filled IAF aircraft, the sources said. Currency notes are usually dispatched to regional centres of the Reserve Bank of India from where they are sent to banks for distribution among the people.
