Andhra farmer held with Rs 12 lakh in new currency
Bengaluru: The city police have nabbed a 66-year-old farmer from Andhra Pradesh and his friend who had come to the city to exchange new currency notes with old ones on a commission basis. The accused, Eshwarappa, from Singareddipalli in Gorantla village in AP was nabbed by a police patrol after a hot chase in Whitefield.
The police intercepted the car being used by the accused and carried a check after they tried to flee. They had Rs 12.10 lakh in the new Rs 2000 denomination. Eshwarappa confessed that he was asked to come to Whitefield by his contact to handover the cash in return of old currency with 20 per cent commission.
The accused did not have any valid documents for the cash he carried. The Mahadevapura police alerted the IT officials and on further investigating tracked down the person who had contacted Eshwarappa. A probe is also on to ascertain the source of the cash, a senior police officer stated.
In a similar incident, the Hebbal police have nabbed two people and recovered Rs 18 lakh of unaccounted cash from them. Based on a tip-off, a team of police raided a place near Baptist Hospital on Bellary road and caught Sridhar and his friend Mohan, who were found waiting for their contact to deliver the amount.
The police said, “Rs 10 lakh were in Rs 2000 denomination (500 pieces) and Rs 8 lakh in Rs 100 denomination (8000 pieces). It was kept inside a car. We took them into the custody and sought documents for the cash. When they failed to provide, we alerted Income Tax officials and they were handed over their custody. We have detained the duo seized the car and handed over the case to IT officials for further probe,” a senior police officer said.
