Thiruvananthapuram on yellow alert' as rains gather strength
Thiruvananthapuram: As per Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) rainfall forecast published at 1 pm, there will be continuous rains for six days and Thiruvananthapuram has been put on ‘yellow alert’ on Wednesday. The forecast says that there will be heavy rain (7-11 cm in 24 hours) on Sunday and Wednesday, at one or two places in the state.
Three dams in Thiruvananthapuram had to be opened following heavy rains as part of the Northeast Monsoon from Friday evening onwards. Four shutters at Neyyar dam were raised by 1 ft. Three shutters at Aruvikkara dam and 1 shutter at Peppara dam also had to be opened. Authorities had warned people living on the banks of Neyyar and Karamana.
According to the data with Indian Meteorological Department, Neyyattin-kara area has received the highest amount of rainfall in the district. Analysing the data between 8 am on Friday and 8 am on Saturday, Neyyattinkara received 102 mm, while the airport area received 78.1 mm, Nedumangad 61.8mm, Thiruvananthapuram city 58.9 mm and Varkala 27.8 mm.
The southern districts in the state have been receiving most amount of rainfall, in the Northeast Monsoon which got delayed by 15 days. The delay was due to a low pressure which developed both in Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, according to reports.
