Thiruvananthapuram: Congress revamp set in backburner

However, the booth, mandalam and block committee strengthening is going on.

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress decided against the revamp at the DCC and KPCC levels for fear of backlash from leaders losing positions.

But this has not gone down well with a cross section of its leaders who point out that there's no revamping for the last eight years.

However, the booth, mandalam and block committee strengthening is going on.

The ‘A’ and ‘I’ groups had been imploring from day one against revamping. KPCC leadership has in principle agreed to these group leaders citing chances of its ripples affecting Lok Sabha poll prospects six months away.

A senior leader quipped, when the political rivals take bare minimum time to revamp the organisation, in his party, it takes almost a decade.

“Congress party is becoming weaker day by day. Just because the senior leaders are engaged in shouting debates, it will not help them win elections. The party should be strengthened before the Lok Sabha polls to avoid setback at the hustings,” he told DC.

Two DCC presidents confirmed that they had been asked to go ahead with the strengthening of the party at the grassroots comprising the booth, mandalam and block committees.

“We understand that already the leadership had taken a decision not to revamp the DCC and KPCC. It is a lean phase for the party,” said a DCC president.

However, senior Congress MLA K. Muraleedharan said KPCC president Mu-llappally Ramachandran would be calling the Political Affairs Comm-ittee meeting after the padayatra and vehicle rallies over Sabarimala verdict.

“It is true that the KPCC leadership is in a catch-22 situation as they are apprehensive of changing the existing office bearers," he told DC.

"At the same time, there is a large section of party workers alienated from the mainstream party level who have to be provided with responsible posts.”
