Chennai: Three killed, six injured as truck rams car
Chennai: Three persons died while six others were seriously injured in a road accident on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway, on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred when nine friends were travelling to Yelagiri and Hoganekkal to spend their weekend. All nine hailed from Mannadi. They began their trip by 6 am on Saturday and had just crossed Kanchipuram by around 9 am, when a vehicle rear-ended their Innova car.
“Due to the impact, the car had scaled the median and jutted to the other side of the carriageway, when a container lorry coming on the other side rammed the vehicle again,” a police officer said.
The container lorry proceeding from Chennai to Bengaluru did not see the car coming, and rammed into it at high speed. Car driver Faizal (24) and two others, Javed (25) and Riyaz (20) died on the spot.
The other six, Arif (21), Yakub (25), Mohammed Diya (23), Mohammed Yasir (19), Insar (25) and Inzamam (25), suffered serious head injuries.
The Kanchipuram taluk police and fire services department were alerted, and they rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. The persons who died were sent to the Kanchipuram Government hospital for postmortem. The injured were first taken to the Kanchipuram Government hospital for first aid and diagnosis, before they were transferred to a private hospital in Chennai for further treatment. Kanchipuram taluk police, registered a case and are investigating using CCTV footages recovered from the area. They found that the vehicle which had hit the car from behind was also a container lorry, but the number plate was not visible. Police are using the make and colour of the truck to gather more information.
The Chennai-Bengaluru highway was blocked for over an hour due to the mishap. Several government, private buses and cars were delayed.
