Srinagar: A Jammu and Kashmir policeman was killed and another wounded in a sneak attack by militants at Rajpora in southern Pulwama district on Saturday.

“The militants targeted a group of policemen maintaining a naka at Rajpora, about 40km south of here, at 4.10 pm,” a police spokesman said.

“In the ensuing gun battle, two police personnel sustained injuries and were shifted to hospital,” the spokesman said.

The duo was rushed to Srinagar’s 92-Base Army hospital. The police spokesman said that the condition of the injured “is stated to be stable”, the claim corroborated by DIG (south Kashmir) S P Pani. But the hospital sources said that one of them senior-grade constable Abdus Salaam has succumbed to his injuries. The other injured policeman has been identified as Munir Ahmed.

The police with the Army and the CRPF, had immediately, after the militant strike laid siege to a vast area of Rajpora to conduct searches. However, no arrests were made, the police sources said.

Earlier on Saturday, suspected militants hurled a hand grenade at a base of the Jammu and Kashmir police’s counterinsurgency Special Operations Group (SOG) at Imam Sahib in neighbouring Shopian district. However, no casualties were reported.
