Hyderabad: Telangana State Police Academy director V.K. Singh, on Thursday startled many when he called police training academies “dumping yards”. He wanted policing to be friendly and the police to replicate Lord Shiva, the protector.
Criticising the manner in which IPS probationers are being trained, Mr Singh, a senior IAS officer, said, “Both the state and national IPS training academies are conducting training for name’s sake and are mostly counter-productive. The training is totally divorced from ground realities.”
Speaking at Academy, Mr Singh remarked, “These training institutions have done more damage to police service than good. Unless we acknowledge the ground realities, our police system will be of less use to people or rather no use. Police subculture teaches policing for the sake of policing and remaining loyal to the powers that be, beyond the frame of the Constitution.”
He added, “All unwanted (officials) and discards in the department across the country are posted in training institutions. Frustration, dissatisfaction and low self-esteem rule the portals of training institutions. We have seen thousands of crores being wasted in police training which kills the human element.”
The officer blamed the system for the criminal justice system to have turned anti-people.
