House ‘sinks’ and collapses

According to locals, the subsidence occurred due to heavy rains in the area over the last couple of weeks.

HYDERABAD: A two-storey building at Chaknawadi in Gosha-mahal collapsed due to subsidence of the soil at about 8 pm on Wednesday. The residents had gone out four hours earlier.

A team of the Disaster Response Force and officials of GHMC’s town planning department reached the spot on Thursday and razed the building to the ground.

According to locals, the subsidence occurred due to heavy rains in the area over the last couple of weeks.

Digging work was going on at either side of the house.

Mr Anjan Kumar, one of the owners of the building, said the house was their ancestral property and they had shifted out six months ago when they found cracks in its walls. A few days back, his elder brother’s family shifted back to the house as their house was under construction. “Fortunately, they shifted to a new house at 4 pm,” he said.
