Hyderabad rains: Landslide buries dhobighat, 2 dead

The landslide killed a 30-year-old physically challenged person, Yadalu, and his four-month-old son.

HYDERABAD: Scattered household articles, collapsed huts, kids searching for their belongings, people who lost everything waiting for help...this was the scene in Dhobighat on Tuesday.

Situated in the low-lying Singadikunta basti in Banjara Hills, Dhobighat was almost washed out in the landslide that occurred after Monday’s heavy rains. The landslide killed a 30-year-old physically challenged person, Yadalu, and his four-month-old son. Many have been left homeless.

The GHMC has announced a compensation of '2 lakh for each of the deceased. “The owner of PVR arcade had dumped soil from two cellars at the dead end of the road and constructed a two foot high wall on the loose soil. Due to heavy rains, the water collected near the wall, leading to the mudslide. We will lodge a complaint against the owner identified as Krishnam Raju. We are also verifying records of building permission to see if he has violated the rules,” said GHMC deputy chief (circle 18) K. Satyanarayana.
