Telangana: Repeated repairs of nalas just do not help
Hyderabad: One of the reasons for the inundation in Nizampet and the I-T corridor during the rain last month was the faulty desilting of nalas.
Municipal authorities have been spending crores of rupees to desilt nalas, and the corporation is billed for the same exercise every year.
Kukatpally GHMC officials spent Rs 1.02 crore to desilt nalas at 37 places in 2013, which rose to Rs 2.8 crore last year. Serilingampally GHMC spent Rs 28.05 to repair and desilt nalas in the IT corridor in 2013 and the estimations were raised to Rs 49.9 lakh last year.
Repairs and desilting of nalas is mandatory every summer but it is of no use as a little rain leads to inundation.
Blocks to the Gangaram Cheruvu nala and Nallagandla Cheruvu nala cause inundations in the I-T corridor including in Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madinaguda and Miyapur.
Water from nalas in Kukatpally from Deendayalnagar to Gouthamnagar, Navjeevannagar to Bojjai Kalyana Mandapam, Ranga-thamuni Cheruvu nala in Balajinagar division and Nalla Cheruvu nala apart from Nizampet nalas are inundating Kukatpally due to the poor quality of work.
Experts said the desilting fails because of negligent officials, irresponsible contractors and the people who dump garbage in nalas.
National Disaster Management Authority former vice-chairman Marri Shashidhar Reddy pointed out that engineering courses did not have a subject on hydrology management and town planning officials too lacked awareness.
He said a ‘Rain Ready’ campaign had been launched to create awareness among the public on the importance of nalas.
