Panel moots closure of ‘idimuris’ on campuses
Thiruvananthapuram: An independent commission headed by Justice P.K. Shamsuddin has pointed out that 'Idimuri' or assault rooms existed not only in University College, but also in Government Arts College and MG College, Thiruvananthapuram, Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, and Government College, Madappally, Kozhikode.
The commission set up by the Save University College Campaign Committee said in the report submitted to outgoing governor P. Sathasivam that the rooms allotted for students' union activities had been turned into assault rooms.
The commission was set up post the stabbing incident in the University College.
It said the SFI leaders did not allow other students' outfits to function or freely take part in elections in colleges where they have an upper hand. Though mostly the SFI exercised muscle power, other unions also do so, said the commission.
It hinted that certain teachers' outfits were also supporting them. The commission recommended the implementation of a stringent code of conduct to end the political violence on campuses and noted that the anti-ragging law could be implemented effectively.
Even police give protection to the criminals who are close to the ruling front, the report alleged.
The first-year students mostly end up being the victims of violence.
Ineligibles students get admissions to colleges through spot admission, sports quota or inter-college transfer. The dominant students' union does not even allow the rival candidates to file the nomination papers, it said.
The commission also recommended the formation of a state-level redressal forum to counter the human rights violations on the campuses and suggested to end the spot admission held at the college level.
Dr V. Thankamani, J. Sandhya, professor S. Varghese and professor G. George were the other members of the commission.
