MTC collects Rs 16.80 lakh from ticketless commuters

The MD stated that the MTC levies a penalty of Rs 500 for travelling without a ticket or the necessary concession passes.

Chennai: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has collected Rs 16.80 lakh from commuters as fine for travelling without tickets. In a release on Tuesday, Managing Director, MTC, Ganesan, stated that the corporation collected total fine of Rs 16.80 lakh from 10,791 persons for ticketless travel in MTC buses over the past three months.

The MD stated that the MTC levies a penalty of Rs 500 for travelling without a ticket or the necessary concession passes. The Corporation has collected Rs 6,00,850 from 3,915 commuters in May, Rs 5,24,100 from 3,658 commuters in June and Rs 5,55,900 from 3,218 commuters in July as penalty for ticketless travel.

He said that travelling without a ticket in buses is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicle Act. The total number of commuters fined for ticketless travel by the MTC from May to July is Rs 10,791 and for the past three months, the corporation collected Rs 16,80,850 as fines. More than 21000 employees work in the corporation and it operates around 3,300 services on a weekday. The MTC added 235 new buses to its fleet a few weeks ago.
