Kozhikode: Clash in Corporation council over AMRUT project

Protest over corruption in scheme; IUML member hurt.

Kozhikode: A discussion on alleged corruption in the execution of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) project in the city has resulted in clashes between ruling front and opposition in the Municipal Corporation council here on Tuesday in which one member of opposition was injured. The leader of Indian Union Muslim League in the council C. Abduraham, whose left eye was injured, has been admitted at a hospital.

Even Mayor Thottathil Raveendran had to wait till senior members of both camps defuse tension, to come out of his chamber. It was UDF member Vidya Balakrishnan who presented the AMRUT as an item to be included in the agenda which was opposed by the ruling front.

There were allegations in the past against inclusion of 'Ram Biologicals' with only Rs 10 lakh turnover as a consultant of AMRUT.

Meanwhile, M.K. Raghavan, MP,said in a press release that the attack on UDF councilors for exposing the corruption on Tuesday is the black day in the history of the corporation. Physically suppressing those who bring corruption charges against CPM has exposed the oppressive attitude of the party, he said. "The stand against political violence declared by CPM district secretariat remains only in paper, not practiced on ground", he added.
