KRISHNAGIRI: An Indian bison was electrocuted after it moved out of the forest and tried to enter a private field ringed in by an ‘illegal’ electric fence near here in Denkannikottai taluk.

The district forest officials arrested T. Muniyan (43) and T. Siddharth, belonging to Periyanoor Settipati and Athimutulu respectively, in Dharmapuri district in connection with this incident on Tuesday.

Working as labourers at S.Palayam village near Iruthukottai of Denkannikottai taluk of Krishnagiri, they allegedly installed an illegal electric fence to stop wild animals from entering the fields of one G. Padmavathi.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a male bison that moved out of the forest and strayed into S.Palayam village, fell dead, stuck by the illegal electrical fence and electrocuted.

After being called by their informers, forest officials went to the place and recovered the carcass of the animal. The department veterinary doctor conducted autopsy and the animal was buried.

Farm hands Muniyan and Sidharth were arrested on charges of killing the animal. Forest department staff is trying to trace the farm owner, Ms. Padmavathi who is believed to have gone into hiding following this incident.
