Telangana will prohibit buildings near Metro

The government has rejected the request of L&T for powers to prohibit or regulate construction of buildings near Metro Rail.

Hyderabad: The state government will prohibit construction of buildings within 20 metres of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. A notification is to be issued to this effect after Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao clears the file.

The government has rejected the request of L&T for powers to prohibit or regulate construction of buildings near Metro Rail.

According to the Metro Rail Act, no building or development will be allowed within 20 metres on either side of the project. An official said this was to protect the Metro Rail from possible dangers.

The distance will be measured from the edge of the applicable Metro Rail structure.

In a letter to the government, L&T said it was the obligation of the operator to ensure the safety of Metro Rail systems and the passengers using the mass rapid transit system.

It said any proposal for construction, development or re-development of any property should be placed for approval before the competent authority of the state government. L&T said such development should not put the passengers at risk, and asked the government to issue a notification prohibiting construction along Metro’s corridors.

The municipal administration department has sent the file to the Chief Minister for approval.

In case of pre-existing structures, the owner should consult the GHMC or HMDA to demolish them or make additions or alterations as and when needed.
