Visakhapatnam: It’s like back to basics. The first ever 'Organic Farmers Market'at the YMCA on Beach Road received a huge response from people on Sunday.
People, especially the elite, did not want to miss the opportunity to explore organic vegetables and fruits. Witnessing the tremendous response from Vizagites for organic vegetables and fruits, the district administration is now thinking of setting up an exclusive market for organic products in the city.
Collector Pravin Kumar said, "The demand for organic food products is soaring but many farmers are unaware of it. So, it is the right time to create awareness among farmers and convince them to go organic. An exclusive organic market has to be planned."
Women in Society through Engagement (WISE), the women’s wing of the Vizagapatam Chambers of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), has taken up the unique initiative - Organic Farmers Market - in a bid to bring farmers in direct contact with consumers.
Rythu Mitra Groups are ensuring the supply of vegetables and fruits. The department of agriculture has organised RMGs consisting of small and marginal farmers (including tenant farmers) which will serve their common interest regarding technology transfer, access to market information and self-reliance in finance, thereby leading to sustainable economic development.
"Our main agendas are social issues, health and individual development. This is our first initiative and will keep conducting them to serve the city and its people,’ said Radhika Satish of WISE.
