Girl, 3, killed in daytime hit and run on busy OMR
Chennai: In a rare case of a daytime hit and run incident on the busy IT highway OMR, a three-year-old girl travelling pillion on her mother’s two-wheeler was killed after a speeding vehicle knocked them down on Sunday afternoon on the stretch between Tidel park junction and Madhya Kailash.
According to Adyar traffic investigation police, the girl Belinda, 3, an LKG student was travelling with her mother Ramala, when the accident happened. The family resides at Kalikundram in Taramani while Ramala’s husband Balakrishnan, works in the USA after finishing catering technology.
“No one is sure about the vehicle which hit the two-wheeler. We are checking the CCTV footage and hope to nab the driver of the vehicle which caused the fatal accident,” said Prem Anand Sinha, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Chennai (south) when this newspaper contacted him.
On Sunday afternoon, Ramala was riding her two-wheeler and her daughter was on the pillion when the two were going to meet a relative in Thiruvanmiyur.
“When they came out of the service road to join the mainstream traffic from Tidel park to take a U-turn at Madhya Kailash, a speeding vehicle coming from Tidel park junction hit the two wheeler. The vehicle after hitting the two-wheeler sped away without stopping,” police said.
Both mother and daughter fell on the road. Belinda sustained injuries and died on the spot. Ramala, with minor injuries had been admitted to private hospital in Adyar. The girl’s body has been sent to Royapettah Government hospital for post mortem.
