Debt-trapped Dalit family gets relief fund from Kerala govt

After the bank officially withdrew the attachment, industries minister A.C. Moideen reached the house and returned its key.

Thrissur: The Dalit family of daily-wage workers whose house the Union Bank attached for default in the payment of Rs 4 lakh home loan was provided with Rs 2.5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

Based on the Aug 30 cabinet decision, the cheque reached Thrissur Collectorate on Saturday, and as instructed by collector A. Kowsigan, the Cherpu branch manager opened the bank on Sunday, and the family handed over the cheque.

Construction workers Sakthivel and Manjula and their three children were living under a plastic sheet on its premises after the bank sealed their house for a Rs 1.25 lakh dues on the Rs 4 lakh loan a week ago.

Revenue minister E. Chandrasekharan had sought a report from the district collector on the issue. The family claims to have repaid Rs 1.5 lakh but only Rs 50,000 seen credited, revenue officials said.

“The total liability at present is Rs 5 lakh, and the government has given Rs 2.5 lakh. The family now needs to pay an EMI of Rs 2,700 for the rest of the term,” Thrissur tahsildar K. C. Chandrababu told DC.
