Congress piles on the pressure over new districts in Telangana

Former PCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah taking up a two-day hunger strike demanding carving out of Gadwal and Jangaon districts.

Hyderabad: The row over creation of new districts and ignoring demands of others reached the state capital on Saturday, with two Congress legislators D.K. Aruna and S.A. Sampath Kumar, along with former PCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah taking up a two-day hunger strike demanding carving out of Gadwal and Jangaon districts.

State Congress leaders K. Jana Reddy, Shabbir Ali and Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka visited the Dharna Shivir at Indira Park, extended support to the legislators’ agitation.

Flaying the government for not declaring Gadwal a new district, Ms Aruna said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has deliberately ignored the age-old demand for creation of Gadwal district which has good infrastructure facilities besides historical importance.

Stating that she can prove this with facts, Ms Aruna challenged the Chief Minister and ministers K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao to an open debate at the venue of her fast.

Mr Lakshmaiah said that despite there being widespread support for Jangaon district, including from the ruling TRS, the Chief Minister had deliberately ignored it and merged it in Yadadri district.

Accusing the CM of misleading the people, he said there was only consensus on creation of new districts in TS but not on non-creation of Gadwal and Jangaon district.

Mr Jana Reddy said he had been repeatedly saying that creation of new districts was not being done scientifically. He demanded the government concede the demand of creation of Jangaon and Gadwal districts.
