Technology benefits should reach poor, says Venkaiah Naidu

The real development could be achieved if the benefits of technology and science reach the poor.

Nellore: Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said that the real development could be achieved if the benefits of technology and science reach the poor. Inaugurating the Demonstration Housing and Community Building Project at Saraswati Nagar in Venkatachalam mandal here on Saturday, the minister said the if the new structure built by the Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) withstands natural vagaries, the government would encourage the use of this technology.

Mr Naidu said the Demonstration Building project constructed using the Glass Fibre Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG) panels made from waste material called Phospho-Gypsum, could be useful for mass housing in the country. The present structure, first of its kind in the country, was constructed by the BMTPC, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, at the cost of Rs 4.56 crore comprising 36 houses.

The Union minister said that Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi's goal is to give house to all homeless and this technology would help achieve this goal by 2022. He said the Centre had sanctioned 9.35 lakh houses of which 1.90 lakh houses were sanctioned to Andhra Pradesh while 80,000 houses to the Telangana State. Mr Naidu observed with the help of the both Centre and state governments the goal could be achieved if the states come forward and offer land for building houses.

Speaking on the Skill Development, who also inaugurated the new building for Skill Development Centre, Mr Naidu said the new centre proposed to introduce new courses in skill development so that youth could get employment. The centre was constructed by Swarna Bharath Trust and Dr BV Raju Foundation adjacent to the Building Project, to give training in Skill development. He said many youth from various states including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa are being training in the centre.

The minister said so far 40 crore youth were given training in various skill development courses across the county by the Centre. MLC Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy and Dr Shailesh Kr.Agarwal, Executive Director of BMTPC also spoke.
