Kochi: Website unclear on engg seats vacancy

Option registration for mop-up counselling ends today.

KOCHI: With the deadline for option registration for online mop-up counselling for engineering seats ending at 5 p.m. on Sunday, the website of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has not given a clear picture of the number of seats vacant in each college in each branch, according to the parents and students.

"As in the previous stages of the allotment, the CEE has failed to provide the details of seats vacant in each college in each branch. In the mop-up counselling, there are only limited vacant seats and it wouldn't be a difficult task for the CEE to provide the exact number of vacant seats in each branch. But even in this small task, it has failed us. That sums up the sorry state of affairs in this year's allotment," said a parent from Alappuhza. He said that the CEE had not made it clear whether students who secured admission to private self-financing engineering colleges in earlier rounds can take part in this mop-up round, which adds to the confusion of the students and parents.

The online mop-up counselling is done for government and aided colleges and three government supported self-financing colleges which requested for the same. These colleges are Sree Chithira Thirunal College of Engineering, Pappanamcode; University College of Engineering, Thodupuzha, and Calicut University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Thenhipalam. An official of the entrance commissionerate told DC that around 400 seats were available for mop-up counselling, but he could not explain why the details could not be made available on the website. Fresh options have been invited in this round and not any rearrangement of options.

Meanwhile, the mop-up counselling for vacant MBBS seats after the second round of allotment will be held at the Travancore International Convention Centre in Sports Hub, Kariavattom, Thiruvananthapuram, from 10 a.m. on August 7. Only those included in the Kerala medical ranklist can attend it. The BDS mop-up will not be held along with this. The details are available on the CEE's website.
