Karnataka: Government move to denotify dry lakes flayed

Activists feel it would destroy the environment and no way help the poor.

Mangaluru: While government claims it is denotifying the dry lakes in the state to carry out development projects and help the poor, environmentalists are skeptical and feel it will take a heavy toll on nature in the long run.

Recently the revenue department has come up with a proposal to denotify the dry lakes and ponds in the state for the government projects. Activists feel it would destroy the environment and no way help the poor.

Lakes in the states do not come under one department and instead are managed by departments like rural development, revenue and irrigation departments. Though Rural Development department has expressed its opposition to this proposal, government could still go ahead.
