Pathetic roads of Hyderabad: Angry KCR wants all roads re-laid
Hyderabad: Upset with the pathetic state of Hyderabad’s roads, Chief Minister
K. Chandrasekhar Rao has directed civic officials to relay every road in Greater Hyderabad, and call for tenders immediately for relaying 100 km of blacktopped roads as part of Phase 1.
The Chief Minister added that the Strategic Road Development Plan — that includes 18 flyovers and two underpasses, was the only solution to traffic jams.
“The Andhra rulers who governed the state had no planning and citizens have had to suffer the consequences. Even the Hyderabad Metro Rail planning has been faulty. Greater Hyderabad’s road connectivity stretches 9000 km — every main road should be newly laid; land will be acquired and main roads will be turned into four or six carriageways. SRDP is the only solution to grinding traffic jams.
“The roads have been choked with a rising number of vehicles. Also, Hyderabad is the fastest-growing city, there are hundreds of investors showing interest, however, bad roads can turn them off; the present condition of roads cannot attract investors,” he said.
The Chief Minister then directed GHMC authorities to conduct a research on roads, jointly with the Indian Road Congress, on standards that needed to be adopted.
All roads should be newly laid in the coming four-five years in a phased manner, he directed. Officers have also been asked to call for immediate tenders for 100 km in Phase
The pathway along the Musi River too must be re-laid with blacktopping, the Chief Minister ordered.
“The Metro Rail planned by the earlier rulers is the cause for the present road congestion. The TRS government will plan the second phase where all these issues will be avoided. White topping, though costly, is being considered for a few kilometers. Cement manufactures have agreed to reduce the price too. Also, lack of coordination between government agencies and frequent digging of roads is the cause for damage. Every road should have a duct to accommodate wires,” added Mr Rao
