Chennai: RPF police help family recover lost gold, valuables

The RPF constable on rounds found an unmanned bag on platform 8 of the Tambaram Railway station and alerted his station head.

Chennai: Two bags containing 20 sovereigns of gold, Rs 2,000 in cash, two mobile phones and several other important documents were recovered from the Tambaram railway Station on Tuesday night, causing a stir with the Railway Protection Force.

The RPF constable on rounds found an unmanned bag on platform 8 of the Tambaram Railway station and alerted his station head.

At around the same time, the RPF control room received a distress call from a passenger aboard the Nellai Express from Chennai to Tirunelveli claiming to have misplaced their bag at the platform on platform eight.

It was then discovered that Jagan( 36) , a manager of a private company in Maraimalai Nagar on the city outskirts and his family were headed to Tirunvelveli to attend a wedding on Tuesday night when the couple left behind a handbag and a shoulder bag containing all her jewellery and cash on the platform itself. The train usually stops only for a few minutes at Tambaram, and they had to get on board the train in a hurry, he had told the police. In the chaos, bags containing the jewellery, cash, a mobile phone, and other various documents were left behind. However, the couple alerted the RPF using a helpline immediately ( 182) and therefore, the bag could be recovered, police sources said.

Jagan got off the Nellai Express at the next station, in Chengalpattu and returned to Tambaram were the police, after questioning handed over the bag to them.
