Chennai: India Vision Institute (IVI) will launch vision centre to provide access to free spectacles to underprivileged communities across India, with a focus on Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. The initiative aimed at maximising outreach to improve eye health, the institute will screen eyes of people and provide spectacles to those in need.

The programme headed by CEO Vinod Daniel has so far provided free screening and free spectacles to more than one lakh underprivileged children in the city.

The state government provides free spectacles and screening support under the National Programme for control of Blindness in Tamil Nadu.

“Around 7-12 percent of children in the world need access of eye care and a large portion of them need glasses for proper vision. In our regular education system, we have 80 per cent of the teachings need visual attention. Children might not be able to identify the issues related to vision and therefore, we hold screening programmes in collaboration with Greater Chennai Corporation to identify such issues in people of underprivileged sections and provide them with free pair of glasses if they need it,” says Vinod Daniel.
