Chennai: AC shoots at rowdy who attacked him with aruval
Chennai: The notorious rowdy gang, after hacking head constable Rajavel of Royapettah police station with aruval because he intervened in their brawl, had snatched his walkie-talkie set and fled from the scene, said additional commissioner M.C. Sarangan.
Six of the gang were caught Tuesday morning and special teams were formed to nab the remaining four, including Anandan. “We got information that the four fugitives were hiding in a place. We rounded them up and secured all. They told us they had thrown the walkie-talkie in that dark area near Madhya Kailash and the special team took Anandan to the place to pick it up”, said the additional commissioner.
He said when the police team reached the spot to retrieve the walkie-talkie, they found there was also an aruval near it. “Anandan picked up the aruval and attacked the police. The AC gave a oral warning asking him to drop his weapon and surrender but he lunged at the officer once again, slashing him on the hand.
The AC opened one round in self-defence, injuring Anandan. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital from where he was shifted to the government hospital but he died on the way”, said Sarangan, adding that the police have registered a case under Sections 176 and 307, and have begun investigation.
“We are preparing all the necessary details and documents as there would be judicial enquiry into the police firing and death, besides the entire episode leading to it”, said the officer.
He said the injured AC was being treated in the hospital, while the head constable with multiple cuts sustained in the brutal Monday night attack was still in the ICU.
It may be recalled that the Royapettah hacking by the rowdies, who seem to be getting bolder by the day, is the third such attack on the cops this week. Four days ago, two drunken men had attacked a constable during vehicle check at Marina and he was left with a broken finger. A head constable was stabbed to death last Monday near a school at Sunguvarchathram in neighbouring Kancheepuram district.
