BBMP, BWSSB get Karnataka High Court rap over storm water drains

The affidavit states that as on June 11, 2018, 169 km of remodelling and construction of storm water drain has been completed.

BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday expressed displeasure over the condition of storm water drains and told BBMP to work in tandem with BWSSB and Karnataka Pollution Control Board. The Palike has filed a status report with regard to the construction, remodelling and desilting of drains. The court was hearing the PIL filed by the Citizen Action’s Group seeking directions to the BBMP to ensure effective maintenance and monitoring of the SWDs.

The affidavit states that as on June 11, 2018, 169 km of remodelling and construction of storm water drain has been completed. It further stated that as on that date 150 km of desilting work was completed. The report also highlighted that on a daily basis they were carrying out cleaning, maintenance and remodeling and construction of SWDs. It also submitted that it has floated fresh tenders for remodelling and desilting of SWDs and the BBMP is taking up further 20 km of work in Yeshwantpur, which will be completed in 60 days.

The BBMP also stated in its report that n order to prevent garbage from being thrown into the SWDs, it has undertaken to lay chain link fencing along the SWDs. The Palike also stated that in order to prevent inconvenience during monsoon, 63 control rooms have been set up and they are working 24 hours a day. The court has asked BBMP to make a detailed and comprehensive report with regard to the plan for cleaning and maintenance of storm water drains in the city and adjourned the matter.
