Tamil Nadu government sets up 50-seater rural BPO centre

Chennai: The state government has established a 50-seater rural BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) centre at Navalur-Kuttapattu village in Tiruchy in the state through Elcot, in an effort aimed at training the rural youth on BPO and thereby prevent their migration to cities.

Also, it has been planned to establish RBPO centres at various places across TN.

Responding to an issue raised by the opposition DMK in the Assembly on Monday, information technology minister M. Manikandan informed that RBPO has been established as announced by the Chief Minister.

Sutherland Global Services Ltd (BPO) company has set-up the 50-seater rural BPO in coordination with Elcot. Similar centres would be established throughout the state, he added.

Further, ELCOT has established eight special economic zones (SEZs) - ELCOSEZ, for development of IT - ITES in tier I and II cities — at Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai (two places), Tiruchi, Salem, Tirunelveli and Hosur. These have provided direct employment to 68,900 persons besides indirect employment to 1,37,800 persons and the software exports from the SEZs were pegged at Rs 17,266 crore during 2015-16.

On the distribution of free laptops to students, Mr Manikandan said during phase VI of implementation of this scheme launched by late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in 2011, about 20,210 laptops were supplied during 2015-16 and the distribution of the remaining 5.16 lakh laptops would commence from this month.
Further, CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami would soon inaugurate a Disaster Recovery Centre at Tiruchy that is being established to ens-ure smooth functioning of the government departments during the times of natural calamities by ensuring a “mirror image of data.”

Govt to develop open data to disseminate info on schemes

Various welfare schemes that are extended to the people through the government departments will be made available on a single platform. The government has proposed to implement “open government data” website soon, IT Minister M. Manikandan informed the Assembly on Monday.

The National Informatics Centre would develop the website of government data as part of transparency measures and it will host particulars pertaining to welfare schemes in all state departments. Information Technology Minister said that the data in the new website would feature socio-economic welfare schemes implemented through departments including education and transport.
The website would be developed at '2.12 crore and referred to the centre creating a website featuring government data as part of transparency promotion measures.
