25,000 students skip tech colleges in AP

More than 300 students have not joined the university colleges of the JNTU at Kakinada, Vizianagaram and Narsaraopet.

Kakinada: More than 25,000 students have not joined engineering colleges after the first phase of counselling, though they had got seats in the colleges of their choice. Some students who had been selected for prestigious university colleges have not taken admission.

University sources said that the students were waiting for the outcome of the admissions process in the IITs, NITs IIITs and other top institutes.

More than 300 students have not joined the university colleges of the JNTU at Kakinada, Vizianagaram and Narsaraopet.

Initially, the state government had instructed students to report their willingness to join the colleges by July 1. Recently, the government instructed the colleges to allow the students to take admission even if there was a delay of some days in view of their future.

JNTUK sources said that based on the report cards of the students, the date for a second phase counseling can be decided.

The students who chose private engineering colleges were waiting for technical courses in university colleges, if they became free. This was one of the reasons that students allotted to private colleges had not joined them.

“We will wait for a few more days to get report cards from the students as per government instructions. After that we will declare the vacant seats position for the second round of counseling,” said University College of Engineering, Kakinada, Principal G.V.R. Prasada Raju.

The Eamcet Office has completed giving ranks and seats for second phase counselling based on the position on July 2. Based on this report, the AP State Higher Education Council may give dates for the second phase counselling.

University sources said the second phase counselling may be held by the end of the month, something that many students are waiting for. These students had either not got seats in colleges or courses of their choice, or had not got seats at all.

The first year B.Tech courses have not commenced due to non-filling up of the seats in their respective colleges. Some engineering colleges where all seats had been taken are waiting for an auspicious date to commence classes.
