BRICS to focus on energy efficiency in Visakhapatnam

Andhra Pradesh is on its way to create a place for itself on the global map in the field of energy efficiency.

Hyderabad: The success of LED streetlights project in Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation limits is one of the main points on the agenda for BRICS nations working group meeting being held in Vizag city on July 4 and 5. The theme of the meeting is energy efficiency and working out a plan for BRICS nations to implement energy-efficient activities.

Representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) will discuss and share the expertise at global-level meet on energy efficiency front.
Government of India selected AP to host the prestigious BRICS event as Andhra Pradesh is number one in the country in implementing energy-efficient activities.

“Andhra Pradesh is on its way to create a place for itself on the global map in the field of energy efficiency. Thanks to the continuous monitoring of the energy sector by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, which led to AP power utilities winning national-level awards and Government of India selecting Andhra Pradesh to host one of the prestigious international events of BRICS nations,” said Energy principal decretary Ajay Jain.

The central government has decided to showcase LED streetlighting programme of Visakhapatnam during the meeting. While reviewing the developments in the context of BRICS event on energy efficiency, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced that the AP government will install about 5 lakh energy efficient pump sets during 2016-17, as part of replacement of existing 15 lakh inefficient agricultural pump sets with five star energy efficient pump sets.

This move is expected to save about 3,000 MU of energy in addition to enhancing production through improved discharge of water to the extent of 15 per cent.

All arrangements have been made for the success of the BRICS event.
In a communication to the Principal Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh, the managing director of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL, Government of India), Saurab Kumar, on behalf of Union Ministry of Power, disclosed that all BRICS nations will study the Vizag model of LED energy efficient street lighting programme by which GVMC has been able to save 70 lakh units of energy and Rs 4.20 crore per annum.

The BRICS group comprises developing countries where the energy growth is expected to be large when compared to the developed countries.
