Heavy rain lashes Hyderabad; two dead

Sudden rains damaged crops as well as houses in parts of Nirmal and Mancherial.

Hyderabad: Thunderstorm accompanied by high intensity winds claimed the lives of two people in Hyderabad and Yadadri districts, besides damaging the top portion of the historic Moula Ali Kaman.

Heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds lashed the twin cities and the outskirts. The civic body issued warning alerts, appealing to citizens to stay indoors as the doplar images showed more rains in store.

While heavy rain was recorded, the IMD issued a fresh heat wave alert for June 4 to 7 for the state. “Heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated pockets in the districts of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Nirmal, Komaram Bheem district, Mancherial, Rajanna Sircilla, Nizamabad, Nirmal, Jagtial, Khammam, Warangal and other districts in the state of Telangana.”

The city on Tuesday is likely to witness rain or thundershowers towards evening or night with day and night temperatures revolving around 39 and 27 degrees respectively.

At BK Guda in SR Nagar, a student was electrocuted when his umbrella reportedly touched an electricity pole. The victim, K. Shivaji, died on the spot. In the second fatal incident, toddy tapper Shikha Chandraiah, 55, died when a tree fell on him. He was climbing the tree which was hit by strong winds at Mallapur of Yadadri mandal. The tree fell on top of him, killing him on the spot. Another person standing nearby was injured in the incident.

At Nalgonda, owing to high-intensity winds, a poultry farm shed collapsed killing over 10,000 hens resulting in the loss of `17 lakh. Agricultural fields suffered damage as well in some districts.

The entire city remained cloudy most of the day, but the mercury level did not drop below 40.2ºC for much of the day. Towards the evening, temperatures dropped by almost 10ºC. The normally bright summer evening turned dark, and motorists switched on the vehicle headlamp as a precaution.

Besides the city, heavy rainfall was registered in Jogulamba Gadwal, Vika-rabad and Mahbubnagar which received around 10 mm of rainfall on Monday evening due to the effect of thunderstorms. Hailstorms were reported at Medchal, Kapra, Vayupuri and other areas.

The maximum rainfall was recorded in LB Nagar, Patancheru, Kapra, Jubliee Hills, Yousufguda and Karwan. The flash rains caused traffic jams during the busy office hours and many localities were plunged into darkness as the gusty winds played havoc with electric lines. In many localities trees were uprooted and in Sainikpuri, Alwal, and Malkajgiri , heavy trees collapsed on to parked cars.
