Chennai: The death of a newborn at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Tiruchy's Perugamani on Sunday, has forced the State Human Rights Commission to probe the case. The commission has ordered the Director of medical and rural health services, Chennai, to enquire the case and submit a report within four weeks.
According to reports, a staff nurse and a sanitary worker tried to deliver the baby in the absence of the doctor, which lead to the death of the baby.
Police said Aina (25), wife of Palanisamy of Perugamani, was admitted to the PHC in Perugamani after she developed labour pain on Saturday night, for her first delivery.
As the doctor was unavailable at the centre at that time, the nurse and staff members decided to go ahead with the delivery procedure. However, the delivery became complicated and they failed to pull out the infant, following which the woman fainted.
On being informed, a doctor visited the hospital during the wee hours of Sunday, only to deliver a stillborn baby. Following this, the family staged a protest outside the PHC over the alleged negligence of the staff and the doctor.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the State Human Rights Commission ordered a probe into the case and sought a detailed report from the Director of Medical and Rural Health Services, Chennai, within four weeks.
