Medicos slam delay in allotments

According to Medical Council of India guidelines, free accommodation must be provided to PG medical students as well as his/her family.

Hyderabad: Medical post-graduate students allege that they are not being given allotment orders to join their respective specialty departments because they are not availing of hostel facilities at their respective medical colleges. The junior doctors allege that the room tariffs are very high for medical colleges that are situated on the outskirts of villages.

According to the post-grads, twin sharing AC accommodation costs Rs 1,90,000 per head plus a caution deposit of Rs 25,000 along with electricity costs. Non-AC twin-sharing rooms cost Rs 1,20,000 including Rs 15,000 caution deposit.

According to Medical Council of India guidelines, junior and senior doctors should be available within the college premises and free accommodation must be provided to the PG medical students as well as his/her family.

A PG medical student said, “We cannot afford to pay such amounts. The college administration and principal are repeatedly talking about university guidelines that say residents should stay in the hostels, but under the same guidelines the college has to pay each resident a stipend. When asked (about this) the same principal is simply dismissing us. It is unfair that poor students who get seats on merit are forced to pay lakhs of rupees citing such guidelines.”
