Hyderabad High Court sets record, works without permanent CJ

Ramesh Rangarajan functions as ACJ for longest time.

Hyderabad: After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the High Court at Hyderabad has served as the common High Court for AP and Telangana. It has created a record of sorts in its 64 year history by functioning with an Acting Chief Justice for nearly two years, awaiting the appointment of a permanent Chief Justice.

Justice Ramesh Ranganathan, the present Acting Chief Justice, will go down in the history of this High Court as being the longest serving ACJ, having been appointed on July 30 2016.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court came into existence in November 1956. Justice P. Chandra Reddy was the first judge to be its Acting Chief Justice, from January 31, 1958 to June 16, 1958.

According to the High Court Registry Acting Chief Justices have held office either for a few months or for a few days. This is the first time that the High Court has functioned for 23 months without a permanent Chief Justice.

Justices P. Satyanarayana Raju, P. Basireddy, A. Sambasiva Rao, Alladi Kuppuswami, A. Laksh-man Rao, Syed Shah Mohammed Quadri, M.N. Rao, N.Y. Hanumanth-appa, Bilal Nazki, Meena Kumar, Ghulam Mohammed, P.C. Ghosh and N.V. Ramana were all Acting Chief Justices either for a few days or for less than a year. Justice D.B. Bhosale was Acting Chief Justice from May 7, 2015 to July 30, 2016.
