CBSE planning system of two level maths exams

Teachers stated that it will help students in their competitive exams coaching as well.

Hyderabad: The CBSE is planning to introduce two examination papers out of which one will be of an advanced level, and leave it to the students to choose depending on their higher education plans. The first question paper to undergo the change will be mathematics from Class 9.

This step, proposed in the new education policy, follows the model in many countries.

Asked about the CBSE proposal, maths teacher Anitha Suresh said, “We have been asked to send our opinions. On the one side it is good. As stated by CBSE, students who will be appearing for JEE can opt for the more difficult mode.”

She said most students who attend coaching for competitive exams in high school are already doing math that is beyond the syllabus. “The new system will be more challenging for them. Students opting for science or arts need not have to do such an advanced level of maths that may affect their scores,” Ms Suresh said.

Teachers stated that it will help students in their competitive exams coaching as well. Mathematics is a subject that many students fear according to National Assessment Survey 2017.

Most curriculums abroad provide an extended curriculum for students who opt for the advanced exam and these students also earn more credits for advanced levels.

Ms Meera Kumar, a high school maths teacher, said, “The new curriculum will divide topics as per their difficulty level. While some topics such as trigonometry that are introduced at the high school level will be present, the questions will vary among both the groups.”

It is not for students to feel discriminated but so that they perform to the best of their abilities and do not feel pressurised, she said.
