Stay away from strike: Karnataka State Police Association

It appealed to the police personnel on Friday not to go on strike since the government has agreed to meet their demands.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Police Association, which is a registered organization established in 1979 by the state government, appealed to the police personnel on Friday not to go on strike since the government has agreed to meet their demands.

The association called upon the police to work an extra hour on Saturday to convey the message that there are no problems in the family of the force.

The association said that the government has addressed 31 grievances, including setting up of a separate pay scale commission for revised and better salaries, filling up of vacant posts, seeking health benefits for constables and their family members, renovation of police quarters and lessening the work pressure with proper leave policies, among many others.

Shivamogga cops unlikely to take part
The police force in Shivamogga district may stay away from the proposed strike on Saturday. A few days ago, some police personnel in the city had submitted leave letters, seeking mass leave as part of the protest. Superintendent of Police Ravi D. Channanavar went to all the police stations and interacted with the policemen and heard their grievances. The SP also promoted a number of police constables as head constables. He said on Friday that around 100 policemen have withdrawn their leave letters.

Cops’ homes date back to British era
Senior police officers across the state, who live in posh residential quarters, had never bothered to take note of the miserable living conditions of their subordinates. In Belagavi most constables are staying in dilapidated quarters and many of them have to do household work in the homes of their bosses.

The official quarters for constables are dilapidated and lack basic facilities such as toilets and regular water supply. Some of the quarters located in Shahpur and City Line date back to British era and they were then used to tie horses and donkeys! When the British left, these localities were converted into houses for the constabulary.

The constables had many times demanded better facilities in the past, but were ignored by their superiors. However after the present controversy, all senior officials of Belagavi, including police Commissioner Soumendu Mukherji, superintendent of police Ravikanthe Gowda and deputy commissioner N Jairam are visiting the quarters of constables.
