Political slugfest over Mathura violence
New Delhi/ Lucknow: The Akhilesh Yadav government on Friday came under attack over Mathura violence from opposition parties with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi saying it is a stark reminder of the “deteriorating” law and order situation in the state. “Unabated violence is a stark reminder of the deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh"” Gandhi said on Twitter.
He hoped that the government ensured that peace is restored and the guilty are punished. While BSP supremo Mayawati said the SP government should resign taking responsibility for the unfortunate and painful incident and demanded a time-bound judicial inquiry.
Demanding a judicial probe into Mathura violence, BJP alleged that the killers of the two police officers enjoyed “protection” of ruling Samajwadi Party and the incident highlighted “lawlessness” in the state.
Party President Amit Shah sent national secretary Shrikant Sharma to take stock of the situation after clashes broke out during a drive to evict illegal occupants in Jawahar Bagh here.
Sharma said killing of policemen was “height of anarchy” and alleged that the policemen were ill-prepared to control the mob as “they were under pressure from the administration to go easy as land-grabbers had links” with the ruling party.
Meanwhile, the Centre blamed the Uttar Pradesh government for the violence in Mathura. “Definitely there was lapse,” Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told reporters here.
He was replying to a question on whether there was lapse on the part of the Akhilesh Yadav government in handling the situation on Thursday.
Encroachers to face NSA Act
The members of a sect who had encroached on government land at Jawahar Bag area here and indulged in violent clashes with police will be booked under the stringent National Security Act, Uttar Pradesh DGP Javed Ahmad said.
“The leaders of the sect ‘Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi’ — Ram Vraksha Yadav, Chandan Gaur, Rakesh Gupta and others will be booked under the NSA Act,” he told a press conference here. The UP DGP said efforts were on to arrest the absconding encroachers.
