IITs to blacklist start-ups which withdrew job offers

The blacklisted companies will again get a chance in the next academic year provided they give a satisfactory explanation in AIPC's meeting.

Chennai: IITs have decided to blacklist the start-ups which withdrew job offers to students this year. These companies cannot participate in campus recruitment for 2016-17.

A decision in this regard was taken at All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC) meeting in Mumbai on Friday. The placement heads of all 16 IITs met to discuss the issue of deferring job offers to students made by start-ups like Flipkart and others. Babu Vishwanathan, training and placement advisor, IIT-Madras, who participated in the meeting, said start-ups were separated into three categories.

The first category companies are who deferred taking students onboard, second category are companies which reduced the promised salaries and the third are those who have withdrawn their job offers.

“We decided to blacklist the third category companies. Some five or six companies withdrew their offers to students this year. They cannot participate in IITs campus recruitment drive for 2016-17,” he said.

The blacklisted companies will again get a chance in the next academic year provided they give a satisfactory explanation in AIPC’s meeting. “IITs want to protect the students. We are sure that this will act as a deterrent for other companies,” he said. India’s largest e-commerce firm Flipkart and another start-up Roadrunner fell in the first category of companies which deferred their offers to students

“Flipkart has given the oral assurance that it would give the IIT students a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000 for the deferred period. Roadrunner said it would recruit the students on September. We wanted written assurance from these companies. If these companies failed to honour their commitments, they will also be blacklisted,” Babu Vishwanathan said.

When asked whether the start-up companies would be slotted again on day one and day two which are reserved for big companies, he said, “It is up to students whether they want these companies to be slotted on day one and two of recruitment. We don’t want to infringe on their rights. IIT-Madras is having around 100 start-ups every year for recruitment.”
