Thiruvananthapuram: Colony under lens for waste dumping

With monsoon around the corner, the corporation is on a mission to clean up canals and water bodies in its jurisdiction.

Thiruvananthapuram: As part of its effort to prevent dumping of garbage in Amayizhanchan canal, the city corporation has decided to set up aerobic bins and material recovery facility at Rajaji Nagar, one of the thickly populated colonies in the heart of the city.

With monsoon around the corner, the corporation is on a mission to clean up canals and water bodies in its jurisdiction. On Friday, a meeting was held with the local representatives of political parties of Rajaji Nagar colony to reach a consensus on resolving the heavy pollution in the canal which is clogged with garbage.

It is learnt that there are around 1,000 families at the colony. Thampanoor councillor Jayalakshmi said that a mass awareness campaign would be launched to educate them on the importance of scientific disposal of garbage.

“Notices would be printed and distributed among the residents of the colony. A section of the inhabitants of the colony is engaged in illegal waste collection saying it’s their livelihood,” said Jayalakshmi. She said those engaged in waste-collection should depend on registered service providers under the civic body for disposing of waste.

The civic body has decided to take stringent action against violators dumping garbage in water bodies posing a threat to public health. The district administration has invoked section 133 of the CrPC to prohibit dumping of garbage in drains, canals and other water bodies.

“We have formed two night-squads comprising 25 members each residing in the colony to prevent dumping of garbage,” said the councillor.
