Hyderabad: Man thrashed for not flushing hotel’s toilet

Man cites Swachh Bharat rules to use the toilet.

Hyderabad: A dispute over a dirty toilet led to an assault, according to a police complaint which came to light on Friday.

A case has been booked at the Lallaguda police station because the complainant was reportedly beaten up for not only using his neighbour’s toilet repeatedly but also leaving it unflushed and dirty. The incident occurred on April 4.

The complainant, Mr G. Anup, owner of a tiffin centre in Vijaypuri, South Lallaguda, said he had been using the toilet in the adjacent Pick and Move Restaurant for about five months, citing the Swachh Bharat mission. The restaurant staff asked Mr Anup to use the Mee Seva toilet located opposite the tiffin shop but he refused. Besides, the staff complained that he used to leave the toilet dirty.

On April 4, Mr Anup, allegedly drunk, used the toilet but did not flush it. This led to a quarrel where Mr Anup claimed he was beaten up by the restaurant staff. A restaurant staffer said that the GHMC had in 2017 directed hoteliers to allow everyone to use their toilets. “Anup is our neighbour and has been using the toilet for months citing he has the right under Swachh Bharat. For months now, he was allowed to use the toilet but he repeatedly left the toilet dirty,” the staffer said.

Speaking about the case, Lallaguda inspector G. Srinivas said, “Anup complained that hotel owner Lawrence Johnson’s staff attacked him at the hotel after he used the toilet. A case under IPC Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) has been booked against the hotel staff. A notice has been served to the hotel owner Lawrence Johnson,” he said.

The hoteliers’ association had earlier protested the GHMC notification asking its members to allow outsiders to use their toilets.
