Shivamogga: The Obavva Pade (squad), which was formed to deal with eve teasers, but went into oblivion later, has been revived in Shivamogga thanks to Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashwini, who assumed office a couple of months ago.
The squad with two women constables and a male policeman, will patrol the city , covering schools, colleges and other places to keep tabs on the eve-teasers, if any, and book them. Although there has been no surge in eve-teasing cases in Shivamogga, the Superintendent of Police believes revival of the squad will act as a deterrent.
“If a girl is teased by a group of boys, she may not report it to the police, but with the revival of the Obavva squad, eve-teasers will hopefully stay away from them,” she explained.
The Shivamogga police has distributed pamphlets among the people seeking their cooperation in not only bringing the eve-teasers to book, but also in alerting it to prostitution being carried out in lodges and hotels in the city.
When contacted, Deputy Director of Pre-University Education, Shivamogga Imtiaz Ahmed said he hadn't received any complaints from colleges about eve-teasing on their campuses or in their vicinity.
The Obavva Pade was started in Shivamogga by the then SP, Ravi Channannavar and was active for merely a couple of months before it went into slumber.
