Chennai: Drunk car driver mows down 2, leaves 1 injured

Police said the incident happened on Friday morning by a drunk man in a speeding car, on the Padi flyover service lane, in Villivakkam.

Chennai: A shocking video that went viral on social media on Friday shows a red Innova car swerving into a narrow lane in Villivakkam, knocking down two pedestrians as it enters the lane, and another woman is hit and dragged to a certain distance, leaving her bleeding to death.

Police said the incident happened on Friday morning by a drunk man in a speeding car, on the Padi flyover service lane, in Villivakkam. A male pedestrian and a woman died, while another woman was lucky to escape with injuries.

Police said the accident happened around 7:10 am and the car was being driven by Devendran (45) of Villivakkkam who is the owner of a travel agency in the city. The deceased has been identified as Madhana Gopal alias Mohan (47) and Sarasa (60), while Adi Lakshmi (50) escaped with injuries.

The accident happened while Devendran was heading towards Villivakkam on Friday morning. Police said after the car entered service road which was closed for metro works, it first knocked down Mohan and Adi Lakshmi, who were standing in front of a tea shop. But, the vehicle did not stop. Devendran then drove into the first street of Annai Sathya Nagar and hit Sarasa. She was dragged to a certain distance, and she died on the spot.

Passersby rushed to their rescue and shifted them to a nearby hospital, where Mohan was declared 'brought dead' and Adi Lakshmi was treated as out-patient, police added.

The locals who had stopped the car, surrounded the driver and alerted the police. The police reached the spot and held preliminary investigation.

Police said the driver was in an inebriated condition, and medicals tests confirmed it. He was beaten up by the people before he was taken over by police.

The Anna Nagar traffic police have booked him for rash and negligent driving, causing death due to negligence and drunk driving, and remanded him in judicial custody.
