Bid to break ATM: Three auto drivers held

The safety alarm turned on as the gang was tampering with the machine. Neighbours rushed in, and on seeing the public, the gang escaped.

Coimbatore: Three auto drivers were arrested for attempting to break open an ATM near Edayarpalayam in the suburbs of the city, late on Thursday night.Police said, three persons had entered an ATM of the Karur Vaisya Bank on the Kavundamplayam - Edayarpalayam road in a drunken state around 12 on Thursday night. The safety alarm turned on as the gang was tampering with the machine. Neighbours rushed in, and on seeing the public, the gang escaped.

On an alert, Thudiyaloor police visited the spot and verified CCTV footages of the ATM booth.

Police picked up three suspects, identified as auto drivers Balaji (25) from Edayarpalayam, Bhuvaneshwaran (24) and Rangaraj (31) from Kavundampalayam. During investigation, the gang admitted to attempting to break the ATM, and steal. Police have registered a complaint and are investigating.
